Simon Clarke is a Chartered Chemical Engineer with the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) and a globally recognized Functional Safety Expert. He is a member of the UK BSI Committee GEL/065/01 (responsible for implementation of IEC 61508 and IEC 61511).

With a multidisciplinary background spanning process, production, and functional safety engineering, he excels at resolving complex interface problems that enhance both safety and production.

Throughout his career, Simon has held various roles with operators, EPCs, and consultants, and has also co-directed his own company. He has trained hundreds of engineers worldwide through the TUV Rheinland and TUV certificate programs. Notably, he was the first in-company trainer of functional safety for Saudi Aramco, demonstrating his expertise in applying Functional Safety Management (FSM) techniques to de-risk projects and operations.

Simon is a pioneering figure in the field, having authored the world's first paper on Functional Safety Assessment 1 (FSA-1), which is soon to be mandated in Edition 3 of IEC 61511. He is passionate about advocating for the adoption of IEC 61511 FSM activities, which provide a robust framework for the future integration of human checks in the implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the safety lifecycle. His work drives a compelling case for compliance, ensuring a safer and more reliable future for industries adopting AI technologies.
